Course Description

Course Description:
This course will offer a brief introduction to the principles of Universal Design for Learning and deep exploration into the ways UDL can be harnessed to balance and meet the varied needs of students with different learning profiles, identify and surmount challenges and limitations in environments where the needs of different students may vary widely, support well-being and belonging for both neurotypical and neurodivergent students, and create truly neuro-shared spaces across settings.

Audience:
Educators and other professionals whose work impacts students and who hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.

Hannah Markos, M.F.A., M.Ed.

Hannah holds an M.Ed from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an MFA from Warren Wilson College. She has worked in education in a wide variety of settings and roles serving learners from birth through adulthood, including within Early Intervention, the Massachusetts public schools, and at Berkshire Community College where she teaches education. Before becoming the coordinator of VT-HEC’s Neurodiversity and Inclusion Graduate Certificate Program, she served as Assistant Professor of Education and Academic Coordinator for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Landmark College.

Additional Content Area

Course Goals:
Participants will gain a foundational understanding and increasingly nuanced command of Universal Design for Learning, develop specific strategies for using UDL in practice, and apply course content to their own work to equitably and effectively support students in neurodiverse classrooms and other settings. They will leave better prepared to communicate the rationale for practice shifts to their colleagues and better able to contribute to the creation of a culture of belonging.
