Electrical Level 1

He has had a multitude of a life & career experiences before starting a career in the electrical field from backpacking through much of the southwest & northwest to a yearlong backpacking trip through Hawaii, Figi, New Zealand, & Australia. From spending a summer teaching kids how to backpack at a boy’s camp in Bemidji, Minnesota to being a deckhand for a couple of years on a small wilderness cruise ship following gray, humpback, blue & fin whales from Baja California to Southeast Alaska. 

He got started in the electrical field is kind of a funny story. He was building his house and decided to take on the electrical wiring of the project. Little did he know this would be his career path going forward. He really enjoyed the physical and mental part of the trade. Starting off in the residential field with his first electrical job, then moving in the commercial, solar & now in the generator field. It’s been a very rewarding career and encourages all his students to try as many different aspects of the trade as an apprentice to find what they like most and what best suits their skill set.  

He likes his classes to have respect for each other, ask questions to, & take the material they learn in his class to their job. The apprenticeship classes are what they make of them. He encourages everyone to speak up and participate in class so that they all get more out of the material. Speaking from his experience, “what you learn in my class you will use during your work hours”.

Ray Richard has been an instructor in the apprenticeship program for nine years, teaching both first- and third-year electrical apprentices. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the electrical industry, with much of his career spent working for some of the region’s largest electrical contractors, including Benoit Electric and Royal Electric. 

A graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy, Ray was first introduced to the electrical trade by renowned instructor Mike Bugbee, whose mentorship helped shape his career path. In addition to his work in the field, Ray owned and operated his own electrical business from 2020 to 2023 before closing the company due to health-related challenges. 

Today, Ray serves as a Project Manager for Pierce Electrical Contractors in St. Johnsbury. As an instructor, he enjoys sharing his extensive industry knowledge and practical experience with apprentices, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed for successful careers in the electrical trade. 

Outside of work, Ray enjoys golfing, watching football, and spending time with his family. He especially enjoys supporting his youngest son, Tucker, as he participates in various athletic activities at St. Johnsbury Academy.

VT/NH Master Electrician since 2011, owner and operator of Hance Electric, LLC since 2011. 

Greg has been interested in how electricity works since he was young. His father worked for the main electrical utility in NYC (Con Ed), and seemed to know everything about electricity, which stocked his interest from the beginning. He began doing electrical work in college getting work study credits. In 1998, Greg began teaching science at the elementary level, and worked for electrical contractors during the summer months, eventually attaining his Master’s license and starting his own full-time business in 2021; transferring to part-time when he began teaching 8th grade science in 2022. 

Greg was invited to teach year 1 electrical apprenticeship through the workforce development program at VTC in 2019, and he is excited to start his sixth year in November 2025. Greg has 14 years of experience providing power and light for residential, commercial, and industrial clients, and has over 20 years of teaching experience. “I agrees that teaching someone a task can be more important than doing the task for them, and I appreciate that the electricians that I have spent time with through the VTSU program have been eager to learn and overall enjoyable to spend time with”.  

Jodi Doyle is an instructor for the Electrical 1 class for the VT State Apprenticeship Program. He is a VT Master Electrician with over 30 years in the trade and works for the state of Vermont as an Electrical Inspector covering the Northwest region of Vermont. Within his 30 plus years Jodi has dedicated 25 years to NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Program development, training and implementation for world class manufacturing throughout Vermont. Jodi’s classroom style is focused primarily around lecture, working through examples with repetition so that students understand the math and formulas required to be successful in the Vermont State Apprenticeship Program. In Jodi’s downtime he enjoys playing music, scale model building, anything with trades. He will continue to give back to the program indefinitely for a program that has given so much to him.

Is a retired Master Electrician with over 53 years of experience in commercial, residential, and industrial electrical work. He graduated from NHVTC in 1972 with an associate degree in Industrial Electricity and spent much of his career working for the State of Vermont before moving into teaching Electrical Level I. He is passionate about helping the next generation of electricians gain hands-on experience and confidence through the apprenticeship program. Outside the classroom, he enjoys tackling projects, volunteering at his church, and spending time with his two orange kittens. He is also a proud father and grandfather with deep French-Canadian roots and a good sense of humor that he brings to his teaching.
